A royal decree convinced him that leaving was better than being a public spectacle as the principle character in a public hanging or beheading. The story does not clarify if he was in France or what was known to be the English Empire, long before it became the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland in 1801. What I actually know about the first members of my family to come to America and their history can be held in a thimble and it was all done orally. Journals, diaries, letters, even what was surely written in family bibles has been lost. What a story that written history would be for me and the world.
